International Lake Tourism Conference 2005 |
About the conference The second International Lake Tourism Conference, held in the Thousand-Island Lake, Hangzhou from the 23 to the 26 September 2005, dealt on issues like marketing, development and planning of this particular form of tourism. How can a lake be transformed into a viable and sustainable tourism product? For the developers and managers of lake tourism, how should lakes be marketed to national and international tourist markets? What are the issues surrounding the implementation of sustainable development and management models which respect the protection of the lake as a natural resource? How do we measure and evaluate ecological risks related to lake tourism activities? What is the future of lake tourism? The conference tried to give answers to the questions mentioned above by developing the following themes: - Developing viable products: Transforming a lake into a tourist site
- Strategic marketing for lake tourism: New markets and messages
- Protection of the resource: Sustainable development of lake tourism
- Natural tourist site management: Best practice and experience
- Living on the lake, working in the city: Emerging contexts for spatial planning
- Sociology of lake tourism: The lake as a symbolic and recreational resource
As a result of the three days of meetings and presentations, the China International Lake Tourism Forum produced the 'Thousand-Island Lake Consensus', an important document that contains the agenda for the lake-tourism community. The document deals with the functions and protections of lakes, lake tourism development and communication and co-operation among lakes. Click here to download it.
